The pretty town of Cassel is about 50 km west of Lille – perched on a small hill surrounded by the flat countryside that characterizes this region. I’ve been wanting to visit and explore for a while after several drive-bys – so finally loaded up the car with our bikes and took a Sunday drive.
Unfortunately the weather didn’t hold out and the cycle adventure was a little damp (however, that is what warm estaminets and hot waffles are for). Hills are few and far between in this region – they call them ‘mounts’- it’s cute, and optimistic. Cassel is well known for its 17th century windmill perched on the very hilly top of the hill. Mostly though, I just rode around on my bike getting hopelessly lost (which can happen when the terrain is flat and all looks the same), and asking ‘where the fuck is zeemersteenvordebrouck?’
