The small, unassuming town of Geeveston is becoming something of an up and coming treechange destination. Located 60km south of Hobart, Geeveston is a welcoming little town at the gateway to the Hartz Mountain National Park. For fans of the ABC TV series ‘Rosehaven‘ this is the town where a lot of scenes are shot. It’s also becoming renowned for great sushi as a trained sushi chef from Japan calls Geeveston home too. For anyone who likes to wander about with their furry friend in tow, it’s very dog friendly – they’ll let you take your pooch onto outdoor eating areas at the Old Bank cafe and Harvest and Light, let them into the information centre and even one of the local craft shops invited my fluffball inside.
It’s certainly not a large town so there’s not a huge amount to do in Geeveston itself (although it punches well above its weight in the cafe scene!), however the walk along the Kermandie River is certainly worth it (both for the art features and the chance that you’ll see a platypus), the tourist information centre sells some beautiful and affordable art, Masaaki’s sushi is very popular, (only open 3 days a week and sells out fast), the Old Bank cafe makes amazing meals, indulge your sweet tooth at the Wall of Lollies, the farmer’s market is on every Saturday (while a community market is on every second Sunday). There’s also a lot of historical tributes to its days as a forestry community. Certainly well worth the detour for anyone on a trip to the far south.
